Young Reporters for the Environment Programme is an enviro-journalism programme for young people aged 11-25 years. Run in over 40 countries the programme aims to empower young people to make their voices heard and take a stand on environmental issues they feel strongly about. The programme gives young people a platform to influence others by articulating these environmental issues through the media of writing, photography or video. The theme for 2021 is Reducing Plastic Waste and registrations are now open, until 16 April via this website.
More about the Young Reporters for the Environment Programme:
- The programme is designed for students aged 11-25 years. Each year a national competition is run with age categories 11-14, 15-18, 19-25.
- Participants pick an environmental topic relating to the theme, investigate it, and then report on it using one of three categories: Writing, Photography and Film.
- Students are then invited to submit their entries to the YRE competition by 5 August 2021.
- Winners will receive a place in the National Winners Enviro-Journalism Workshop and automatic entry into the prestigious YRE International competition.
- Students are also supported to undertake the optional task of planning a media campaign or organising an action event to raise awareness of an environmental issue on campus or the wider community. (Keep New Zealand Beautiful will provide students with an Environmental Campaign kit to assist with implementation).
- All entrants will receive a participation certificate to include in their CV.
- Ongoing opportunities exist for YRE Alumni to apply for scholarships to high-level global conferences such as COP and WEEC. Read about New Zealand scholarship recipient, Joanna Tao’s experiences here.
