  1. Posing this as chair of this panel and member of the group. The question that our research has been dealing with is what brought us together:

“What insights might we produce in studying the points of connection between artificial intelligence and humour and between algorithmic culture and laughter?”

We’re still exploring the overlaps and the connections between our research areas and are keen to add more and other perspectives *and members—to think about the phenomenon of laughter and see what humour is; and, what it does in complex culture systems like comedy or online media feeds and automated creativity.

(Ian Reilly won’t be able to join us for the live Zoom tomorrow. He’s in France and is teaching a seminar the night before.)

  2. Brian Christian in “More Human Than Human” suggested that any one who can be replaced by a machine is already a machine. For example, the production line worker is already operating like a machine – the system of that mode of production needs the attributes of a machine rather than the human. The machines are already here, it’s just that some of them are made of flesh and blood.
It is interesting that we set much higher standards for machines than we do for people. We don’t expect (or accept) that a machine may be arrogant, ignorant or petty. People are allowed to be like this. We don’t expect (or accept) that a machine can be wrong. The post-human requires use to reevaluate the human/machine opposition. It is getting more problematic to draw a distinction.

  3. Thanks to all the people on Zoom yesterday to engage with our research question and the intersections in post-human culture, tech, and feminist humour production that we were presenting on. As we had said in the conclusion, anyone interested should feel free to get in touch.
Thank you on behalf of our group!
