Symposium Streams
The participant images, stories and reflections submitted to Pedagogies of Hope in Higher Education will be organised across six thematic streams. Each stream will have its own space for contributions and discussion during the symposium.
1. Hope, uncertainty and the work of educational change
Contributions exploring how hope is practised through teaching, course design, assessment, alongside networks and collective efforts to transform education in uncertain times.
2. Indigenous and Afro-Indigenous perspectives for a decolonized & pluriversal future
Contributions engaging Indigenous, Afro-Indigenous, decolonial and other knowledge traditions to rethink education and the kinds of worlds we are helping to make.
3. Hope in a time of socio-ecological crises
Contributions engaging political ecology, environmental education/psychology and related perspectives to examine climate change, ecological breakdown, place, more-than-human relations, environmental justice and socio-ecological futures, including the tensions between hope, grief, denial and action.
4. Nurturing Hope: mutuality, action, and the gift of listening
Social beings asking “How now?”, we must imagine, care for and attend to what matters. This stream explores how hope can be nurtured collectively through listening with others, creating relationships, and exploring practical possibilities, while also attending to the differences in power and structures that shape the possibilities and limits of collective hope.
5. Universities as sites of refuge, struggle and action
Contributions examining how universities can both counteract and reproduce broader inequalities and harms, and how university classrooms can serve as spaces of sanctuary, community engagement, and meaningful action, prompting questions about what kinds of hope are possible within institutions marked by contradiction.
6. Hope, Technology, and Alternative Futures in Higher Education
Contributions exploring the ways in which emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence, online/hybrid/digital learning, and hope intersect. We welcome work on connection, belonging, access, exclusion, justice, power, care, and the futures that educational technologies help us imagine, enable, mourn, abandon, or foreclose.
