Where do NZ’s plastic exports go? Stories from receiving countries

Daru Setyorini is an environmental biologist and the program manager of ECOTON in Gresik East Java Indonesia. She works on industrial pollution, waste management and river conservation. Since 2018 ECOTON has investigated paper waste import from developed countries to paper mills in East Java. Waste paper and plastic recycling causes Brantas River pollution. Plastic scraps are dumped or openly burned on riverbanks near paper mills.

Heng is a Greenpeace Malaysia Campaigner who has been extensively involved in imported plastic waste investigations since 2018.

Sabine Rached supports the Global Alliance for Incinerator Alternatives (GAIA) to advocate for robust regional and global policies and standards for plastics, focusing on plastic waste, in order to combat plastic-related harm to health, communities and the environment, and pave the way for a just, local and toxic-free zero waste economy.

Yuyun has broad and rich experiences in environmental and wastes issues. She is an environmental health advocate, actively involved in chemicals and wastes conventions negotiations.

At the local and national level, she represents Nexus3 Foundation (formerly known as BaliFokus Foundation), and a steering committee member of the Alliance for Zero Waste Indonesia (AZWI). She is also actively working with all stakeholders towards a toxics-free future.

At the global level, Yuyun is affiliated to IPEN, WECF, GAIA, BAN, and BreakFreeFromPlastic movement.

Yuyun is a Goldman Environmental Prize awardee 2009, an Ashoka Fellow and LEAD Fellow. She holds an Environmental Engineering degree from Bandung Institute of Technology, Indonesia and MSc in Environmental Change and Management from the University of Oxford.
